Snape Castle

Snape Castle

Snape castle was built around 1430, when Ralph de Neville, 1st Earl of Westmorland gave Snape to his younger son, George Neville, 1st Baron Latimer. It is now a private dwelling and not open to the public.

The castle is reputedly haunted by the ghost of Catherine Parr, last wife of King Henry VIII. She married Lord Latimer when she was 19 years old, and resided here until her husband passed away in 1542. Shortly afterwards, she would enter British history as the sixth and final wife of Henry VIII.
